In the Republic of Congo, the population is currently around 5.9 million, two-thirds of whom live in urban areas, with a growth rate of 2.551%. This constant growth leads to urban imbalances attributed to the lack of prior infrastructure development in urban centers, which are experiencing irreversible aging due to weak regulatory mechanisms, inadequate financing, and a shortage of decent, affordable housing.<\/p>\n

The Durquap project, a government initiative of the Republic of Congo, was jointly funded and implemented with the World Bank over a five-year period, from 2016 to 2021. With a budget of US$120 million, including US$40 million from the government, this project addresses several urban development challenges. It focuses on urban development and operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Land Use Planning, Infrastructure, and Public Works. The project's objectives were twofold: first, to improve living conditions in selected disadvantaged neighborhoods of Pointe-Noire and Brazzaville, enabling residents to access basic infrastructure and services; and second, to strengthen the management capacities of national and local authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n

In May 2023, the Republic of Congo adopted Local Urban Development Plans (PLUs) to regulate the development of its two main cities \u2013 Pointe-Noire and Brazzaville \u2013 which faced several urbanization problems.<\/p>\n
